Glaciers of Iceland

Iceland has many small glaciers and also a big one. The largest glacier is called Vatnajokull and covers around 4% of the island and is also the largest glacier in Europe. Other glaciers, such as Langjokull and Eyjafjallajokull, are great places to take glacier trips on snowmobiles or large super jeeps. Eyjafjallajokull is probably the most famous one, as the recent volcanic eruption put the airline industry on its side in 2010.

Glacier lagoon - Jokulsarlon

This is a must see when travelling in Iceland. Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon is in the south part of Iceland, located directly south of Iceland´s largest glacier Vatnajokull. The lagoon is seperated only by a small strip of land from the Atlantic Ocean. Giagantic pieces of the glacier break off over time into the lagoon and form a lagoon full of icebergs. Gullfoss and Geysir(The Golden Circle, along with Thingvellir)

The Golden Circle is a popular trip to take when exploring the country of Iceland. The trip includes stops at the infamous geysir named Geysir (that´s where the noun geysir acctually comes from). Other geysir which erupts every 15-20 minutes is called Strokkur and the water eruption explodes 20m up in the air. Another stop on the golden circle is the powerful waterfall Gullfoss. This waterfall gives one a sense of how small we are compared to the powers of nature. The fall of water is about 32meters and it plunges over rock ledges in a series of two cascades.

Snæfellsjökull

You will find this amazing glacier in the west part of Iceland on the far end of a small peninsula. Snæfellsjokull has mysterious powers. It is believed that the glacier has mystical powers and it has drawn people all over the world to visit it ever since Jules Verne wrote “The Journey to the Centre of the Earth”. Snaefellsjokull is a national park.

Thingvellir

The National Park Thingvellir is a treasured place in the hearts of Icelanders because it is a historic place. Iceland´s first parliament was founded there in around 930AD when the chieftains of the different parts of Iceland came together to discuss the local issues. Thingvellir is also located on two moving tactonic plates and one can actually walk in a small canyon exactly on the line where the tactonic plates align.

Myvatn

A relatively large area of a diverse environment including the lava formations at Dimmuborgir, Mount Hverfjall, the volcano Krafla and the geothermal hot areas of Namaskardur. Myvatn is a very active geothermal area and you can find geothermal pools there to visit.

Asbyrgi

This awesome looking 3,5km long canyon is one of Iceland´s most beautiful places. The strong walls of the canyon reach up to 100m high and during the breeding season fulmars occupy the area. Asbyrgi is also in the National Park of Jokulsargljufur.

Blue lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is a must-see during all seasons, whether it may be in sunny June or in the winter. The lagoon is a natural phenomenon and the origin of the seawater is from 2,000m below surface. The lagoon draws its name from the actual color of the lagoon which is blue. The reason for the blue color is that permeating the porous lava, a blend of sea water and fresh water undergoes mineral exchange and then near the surface, concentration occurs, due to vaporization, evaporation and finally, sedimentation. The silt in the lagoon as healing powers, due to the mixture of minerals, silica and algae and does wonders for people with all kinds of exema, especially psoriasis. In the Blue Lagoon you will find a modern restaurant, bar in the lagoon and you can get your massage therapy while in the lagoon.

Thorsmork and Landmannalaugar

Thorsmork national park is a breathtaking place inbetween the mountains in the south part of Iceland. It is not accessible in a regular touring car, you have to have a 4x4 jeep to go there or go by a special bus. There are strong rivers that you have to cross and taking a vehicle not suitable for those conditions is simply dangerous. In Landmannnalaugar you will find yet another geothermal hot springs where you can bathe in. It is a bit difficult to get there because like Thorsmork you must have a suitable 4x4 jeep to get there. Landmannalaugar hot springs are in the middle of the country high above sea level.

Akureyri

Is the biggest town in northern Iceland. It is very beautiful there. It has a famous church and many old charming houses. Fine dining and a vibrant night life for this size town. A great place to spend the night as you can go on day tours around the north part of the country, such as Myvatn geothermal area.

Dettifoss

Is located in northeastern Iceland, is Iceland's highest and largest waterfall. It is also said to be the most powerful waterfall in Europe. The falls have a vertical drop of 44 m. Dettifoss is on the river Jokulsá á Fjollum, the second longest river in Iceland. The Jokulsa á Fjollum is a glacial river.

Seljalandsfoss and Skógarfoss

If you are into waterfalls then this trip will not disappoint you. About 2hours east of Reykjavik, on Route 1, you will hit Seljalandsfoss waterfall followed by Seljalandsfoss waterfall about 30 minutes later. Both are something for the eye and the former waterfall (Seljalandsfoss)is a waterfall where you can walk in a circle behind it and get a litte wet. Skógarfoss waterfall is a bit more massive as it is about 200ft high and about 30ft wide.
